Corps member donates starter packs to Mabushi women
Member of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in Abuja, Kelechi Obi, at the weekend, commissioned an initiative programme for women in Mabushi.
The initiative targeted at training women in skills such as baking, shoe and beads making amongst others had over 30 participants.
Obi, a corps member serving at the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, said the empowerment project has to do with skills acquisition and seminars.
Obi explained that “we trained the women on different skills and we are giving them start up kits so that nothing stands as a restraint to them. I intend continuing with the skills after this.”
Also, the Director of Information, Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Dr. Theodore Ogaziechi praised the initiative of the corps member.
“She is one out of many corps members that have served in my department and has proven to be exceptional.
“She has shown that you can actually leave a legacy wherever you find yourself. She came into works and was able to penetrate the community and was able to find out that the women here have little or nothing doing during their spare time and she decided to engage them and teach them few skills like baking, shoe making, bead, soap, perfume and bag making amongst many others.
“Now she is giving them starter parks for them to begin practicing all they have learnt. She was also able to gather support from well-meaning Nigerians and agencies and from there she has trained them,” Ogaziechi said.
He advised youths to learn skills instead of indulging in crime, stating that “To the youths I say that crime is never an alternative, they should learn hand work it is not a matter of buying and selling but to learn skills so that they can be able to improve on their economy and that of the state.”
In his address, the Chief of the village, Etsu Maupeyi, who was represented by Mr. James Kusase, appreciated the corps member for her work and enjoined the women of Mabushi to continue in the newly acquired skills.
“We appreciate the corps member who initiated this and we pray that God continually bless her. We thank the director and all those who supported her one way or the other. I advise the beneficiaries of this project to continue in the skills they have learnt and also use it to help their families,” he said.
